Hail The Scorpion King! (Happy Birthday To The ROCK!)

Image
In The '90's, the WWE was moving away from the squeaky clean image of Hulk Hogan and the 'say your prayers and eat your vitamins' era of wrestling and moved to the 'Attitude Era' of the entertainment sport. This was in response to the rivalry of the WCW and created a new era of sports entertainment. It would become an era of 'antiheroes...' wrestlers that the fans loved because of their bad attitudes. And among the very best of that era was Dwayne Johnson...A.K.A. The Rock. He was physically as imposing as any WWE star but what made him special was his insane charisma and mic skills. Truly one of the all time best trash talkers in wrestling. Soon, Hollywood would want to capitalize on that charisma and he would make his film debut in the rekindled Universal Monsters franchise The Mummy. 2001's "The Mummy Returns" was a spectacular blockbuster hit and would catapult him to stardom...as he would be given his own film based on the charac

Remember, ladies and gentlemen.. The small things add up. Recycling, conserving water, using reusable bags, abstaining from meat at least one day of the week. All Play And No Work Makes Jack A Birthday Boy (Happy Birthday Jack Nicholson!)

Image
Born on April 22nd 1937, the great Jack Nicholson celebrates a birthday and a legendary career spanning six decades. His filmography is littered with Hollywood classics, like "Easy Rider," "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest," "Terms Of Endearment," "Chinatown," and "The Departed." Much like movie star icons Humphrey Bogart, James Cagney, and James Stewart, he is an actor often imitated but more often than not it's out of love. He has been nominated 12 times for the Academy Award (the most of any male actor) and won once for Best Supporting Actor ("Terms Of Endearment") and twice for Best Actor ("One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" and "As Good As It Gets"). Surely a career worthy of praise. But if you erase all of those accolades and just recognize him for his role in horror and his roles in villainy, it's STILL an impressive career. Early in his career he starred in Roger Corman's cult

A Modern Man Of Many Faces (Happy Birthday Tim Curry!)

Image
The sign of a truly great actor is his ability to BECOME the character. Slide into it as the actor or actress disappears and the character becomes real. Few actors have achieved the kind of disappearing acts of a true actor that the great Tim Curry has. He rose to fame as the transvestite mad scientist Frank-N-Furter in the 1975 cult classic "Rock Horror Picture Show." Aside from theater roles like "Hair," he also starred in supporting roles in the film "Annie." My sister was a massive fan of that film and I used to watch it often when I was a kid. Many a great performer appeared in that film, and Mr. Curry held his own with legendary talent. Of course, he would become legendary himself in the years to come. He would have a hellish time portraying Darkness in the 1985 film "Legend." This is perhaps the ultimate 'disappear into the character' role as he was simply unrecognizable in the extreme make-up. The film is still a curious fa

Honey, I'm Blowing Out The Candles! (Happy Birthday Rick Moranis!)

Image
Rick Moranis was born on April 18th, 1953 and originally started his career in entertainment as a disc jockey in Toronto, Ontario, where he was born. He ended up doing sketch comedy in the Second City Television Series (SCTV) and continued to rise, heading off to Hollywood. From there he starred in some of The '80's most beloved comedies. "Little Shop Of Horrors." "Parenthood." The great Mel Brooks spoof "Spaceballs," which was such a treat being a Star Wars fan. And of course the "Honey, I Shrunk The Kids" franchise. But I knew him from one beloved '80's franchise...Ghostbusters. His character Louis Tully provided some of the biggest laughs in an already hilarious pair of films and he, along with the famous cast, brought such joy to my childhood. I used to watch the films, the cartoon show (which his character also appeared from time to time), had the toys, drank the Ecto Cooler. What a time to be alive! He also had some
