One thing that I wanted to experience as a kind of bucket list item was to see a silent film accompanied by live music. I'm a fan of the silent film era and I knew there were productions that performed scores to silent films. It was something that if I had the opportunity to see, I would do my absolute best to try and catch it. And a pleasant surprise reared its head.
I had decided with all of the streaming and slow theatrical film release season dragging along, I wanted something different. So I headed to my local performing arts center to watch a few classical concerts performed by the young college talent. And as I was enjoying the concert I had noticed the upcoming performances coming to the performing arts center. And one of those performances was "Right In The Eye: Live Movie-Concert of Georges Melies Films." What a pleasant discovery! And as I had declared previously...I would without fail make an effort to see this project.
So arriving to this show I was immediately jazzed. There was no way I was leaving this performance disappointed. Couldn't happen.
What surprised me was that it wasn't a full orchestra. Or even a small orchestra. It was a three man group, led by a brilliant French musician and composer Jean-Francois Alcolea. I was intrigued. And to my delight this performance was INCREDIBLE.
It started with an introduction, which was a short documentary. Then it kicked off with "The Marvelous Living Fan." Not only were these three perfectly performing in sync with the film, but they were performing music and sound effects, using instruments ancient and modern. It was something to behold.
The music itself was strange and had the air of prog rock. And definitely had arthouse vibes. And experiencing the wonderful films of Melies in this way was a dream. The French Magician who created these delightful films in the late 19th century and the turn of the century 1900's was indeed a pioneer of moviemaking. The effects in 2025 may come across and silly when you see them, but special effects even in the modern age can be hokey. But back in the late 1800's it was indeed MAGIC. Movies ARE magic.
I would hope that if you could see this, or any kind of production like this, go make an effort to do so. It will make your life much richer for it.
