As of today, the consensus is that nothing has topped the original 1993 Steven Spielberg classic "Jurassic Park." Based on the Michael Crichton novel, it ushered in a new age of digital effects that changed the game for cinema. Many top filmmakers followed in Spielberg's footsteps and adopted CGI, and soon after that they became the industry standard. The sequels that followed have not lived up to the original, but as the box office for these films have proved, is that the fans will continue to buy tickets to see this magical genre of living dinosaurs regardless of the eroding quality.
So going in to see this new installment, "Jurassic World: Rebirth," only confirmed that these films are becoming 'old reliable.' Whether or not they come close to the quality of the original doesn't matter. It's a cinematic roller coaster ride and people will pay to get on the ride.
The film stars Scarlett Johansson as a covert operations expert hired by pharmaceutical company to take a group of experts, including scientists and boat captains, to go to a forbidden section of an abandoned island to retrieve dinosaur DNA as it was discovered to have elements that would cure diseases in humans. As they are on their adventure, they rescue a family of four lost as sea and are forced to take them to the island as well. What follows is a fantastic and dangerous adventure filled with dinosaurs and chaos.
In my opinion 3 years wasn't enough breathing room to restart the franchise as they had just completed a new trilogy of films. But if the franchise makes money, it doesn't really matter. They can continue to make films as long as there is interest. And it appears that the Jurassic Park/World franchise is alive and well, thanks to literal theme park rides, toys, and other merchandise. I was wrong about giving the franchise a break. Clearly the fans have spoken with their dollars. And if these films do what movies do best and take people away from their worries and cares for a couple of hours, then it's worth the time and money.
