On January 15th 2010, the Denzel Washington action film "The Book Of Eli" was released in the looked down upon 'dumping ground' period of January. Not being an Oscar bait film and looked at as more of a Washington Hollywood star vehicle, it didn't seem to create any more buzz other than 'here's your movie, check it out if you please.'
It had been almost a decade since he had won his Best Actor Oscar for his truly amazing performance in "Training Day" and though he put out some cool stuff after that, it was mostly remakes and action films. Paycheck type stuff, though Mr. Washington always seems to elevate the material he's in.
What made "The Book Of Eli" different is that ten years after it has seemed to have gained appreciation for being a clever take on the action film, with a twist that gives the entire film a richness you weren't expecting.
I remember seeing this film when it came out and I though it was a fantastic action film. I never thought I would hear random folk bring it up when talking about Denzel. It would take me aback a bit but ultimately I would never disagree.
Directed by The Hughes Brothers, this post apocalyptic modern day western is a standout in the genre. And there are plenty of truly great post apocalyptic gems.
The film in its day wasn't well received and wasn't a big box office attraction, but video sales after it's theatrical run were great and that's probably why it has remained in the minds of genre fans.
So here's to the lasting appreciation for "The Book Of Eli," an 'eye opener' of the post apocalyptic action film.

Intentional Parallels? ("Conclave" Movie Review)
"Conclave" is a mystery thriller based on the 2016 Robert Harris book of the same name. Starring Ralph Fiennes, John Lithgow, Stanley Tucci, and Isabella Rossellini, the film focuses on the most powerful group of the Catholic Church cardinals as they mourn their recently deceased pope and prepare to vote for a new one. As they continue to vote and debate the merits of the nominees, many twists and turns present bumps in the road. And that last twist...well, it's a doozy. Being a registered independent, this film firmly leans in the progressive side of things, though corruption seeps into all sides. It is a fight for those in the middle to choose which way the church will continue into the future. Whether it should go back to reading Latin and become so conservative that they choose not to accept other religions or liberal points of view, or whether to continue to go in a more progressive way and deal with the world as it changes. As I watched this film I couldn't help...
