An Entertaining Crossover ("Karate Kid: Legends" Review)

When I saw the soft reboot of "The Karate Kid" back in 2010, I figured like 1994's "The Next Karate Kid" it would be a film that would be part of the overall lore, but mostly forgotten. I have a passing memory of liking the film, but honestly it never had the iconic moments of the first two films. The original is an honest to goodness '80's classic, as is the second part, which continues the story without being a derivative copy of the original. The third film may not have been up to the level of the first two films, but it's a nice capping of the original trilogy.

I'm very fond of the franchise as a whole though, so when I saw that there would be a crossover film with Jackie Chan's Mr. Han and the original films protagonist Ralph Macchio's Daniel LaRusso, I was quite intrigued and very excited.

Going into the film and seeing the way the film connects the original film's Mr. Miyagi and the reboot's Mr. Han, I was very happy to see through the second film how this was a shared universe. And with the success of the show "Cobra Kai," this dated trilogy that had its day is now a full fledged universe of characters and timelines. The film itself does follow the familiar beats from the previous films, and in that sense it's not exactly a standout among the series. But hey...if it isn't broke...

Though this is indeed another version of a familiar story, the continuation of characters now coming together is very satisfying. And I have to single out the young lead, Ben Wang. It's very hard to come into a famous franchise with legacy characters and stand out, but he indeed stands out as a charming and bright new talent. I look forward to what he does next.

If you wait for this film to come to streaming, I get it. But for old school fans like myself, there's nothing like seeing a Karate Kid movie in the theater. Whatever the ranking, you're bound to come out of the theater ready to conquer the world. That's how satisfying these films are. And you get your fill with this new one as well.
