Predictable Story, Thrilling Execution ("F1 the Movie" Review)

Joseph Kosinski has quickly become a blockbuster director on the rise. Whether it's with the underrated "Tron: Legacy" or with the box office smash "Top Gun: Maverick," he is making movies that the general audience is flocking to see and he's making films with respected stars who trust his hand.

After the massive success of "Top Gun: Maverick," many filmgoers (including myself) were eagerly awaiting his new entry, "F1 the Movie," which would star international star Brad Pitt as the lead character. An absolute no brainer.

After seeing the film, which I had a great time seeing, I still acknowledge that it's a basic, by-the-books story of race car driving, much like it's spiritual predecessor, 1990's "Days Of Thunder" ("F1" even uses Hans Zimmer for the score). People going to see this film won't be surprised by how this film unfolds and may even see its twists and turns ahead of them actually happening. But, to be fair, "Days Of Thunder" was a lot like that as well. Not meant to be super complex, you get what you get. A basic crowd pleaser. But sometimes that's what you want. And sometimes a simple crowdpleaser is fun for the summer movie season.

Setting the story aside, the racing sequences are as good as it gets for state of the art visual effects. Taking from "Top Gun: Maverick," which had cameras in the cockpit of a fighter jet focused on Tom Cruise as he flew high in the sky, this film has cameras in the race car focused on Brad Pitt as he zooms across the race track. That's basically the selling point of the film. Not necessarily the human drama, which isn't super compelling, but the action. And in that way it more than delivers. You get the experience of racing a car better than any film previously and because they're practical effects it makes the experience that much more thrilling.

If you want to get some popcorn and just lose yourself and enjoy the ride, this is the film to go to. It's worth your money. It's basic, but it's thrilling and worth your time.
