Honey, I'm Blowing Out The Candles! (Happy Birthday Rick Moranis!)

Image
Rick Moranis was born on April 18th, 1953 and originally started his career in entertainment as a disc jockey in Toronto, Ontario, where he was born. He ended up doing sketch comedy in the Second City Television Series (SCTV) and continued to rise, heading off to Hollywood. From there he starred in some of The '80's most beloved comedies. "Little Shop Of Horrors." "Parenthood." The great Mel Brooks spoof "Spaceballs," which was such a treat being a Star Wars fan. And of course the "Honey, I Shrunk The Kids" franchise. But I knew him from one beloved '80's franchise...Ghostbusters. His character Louis Tully provided some of the biggest laughs in an already hilarious pair of films and he, along with the famous cast, brought such joy to my childhood. I used to watch the films, the cartoon show (which his character also appeared from time to time), had the toys, drank the Ecto Cooler. What a time to be alive! He also had some

Unrivaled (Happy Birthday Rowdy Roddy Piper)

Image
I grew up an insane WWE (formerly WWF) fan and I loved the energy and excitement of the wrestling superstars. Hulk Hogan. Randy Savage. Andre The Giant. They were all larger than life. And of the the greats from that era was the amazing 'Rowdy' Roddy Piper. He displayed an energy that was unrivaled. And that's saying something, since every superstar was as over-the-top and insane as you can remember. For those that don't know wrestling, there's a term called 'heel.' Basically in the early days there were good guys and bad guys. It was The '80's...pretty clear cut in those days. And Piper was a heel. But he was so brilliant in his delivery and his mic skills that he was among the most popular of superstars. I believe all of the 'grey' wrestling superstars have benefited from his legacy. You could be considered a heel but if you had the charisma, you were loved. And much like a handful of wrestling superstars that made the leap to The B

A Bewitching Talent (Happy Birthday Elizabeth Montgomery)

Image
The Emmy and Golden Globe nominated actress Elizabeth Montgomery was born on April 15th 1933 and was a star of stage and screen spanning five decades. The daughter of actor Robert Montgomery, she appeared in her fathers television series "Robert Montgomery Presents" and even won a Theater World Award for her Broadway debut in "Late Love." But for many fans of classic television, she will forever be known as Samantha Stephens in the late '60's - '70's sitcom "Bewitched." "Bewitched" ended it's run in 1972 but I was very familiar with the show thanks to syndication. She was a lovely, charming presence onscreen and the show overall was just a pleasant treat for sitcom lovers. It never ceased to put a smile on your face and leave you feeling happy. After the shows run, she made some notable television movies. My favorite by FAR is her appearance as Lizzie Borden in 1975's "The Legend Of Lizzie Borden." Aside f

Ghost Hunter, Scream Queen, Vampire Hunter (Happy Birthday Sarah Michelle Gellar!)

Image
My mom and sister were big on soap operas, and in The '90's I was familiar with Sarah Michelle Gellar as I first saw her in episodes of All My Children with Soap Icon Susan Lucci, holding her own. She wouldn't stay long in the soap world and her ambition took her from daytime to primetime with the small screen adaptation of "Buffy The Vampire Slayer." Even though it was originally a big screen take, her version of Buffy is now for many the definitive one. Which isn't a small feat considering back then television was still not on the level it is now. And of course with that success, the Big Screen called. She would appear in hit movies like "I Know What You Did Last Summer," (which I admit was a fun time at the theater), "Scream 2" (which was a solid sequel to an instant classic), "The Grudge," an American adaptation of the classic Japanese Ju On Horror film franchise, and the following sequel, and the Scooby Doo franchise,

Have a Peepy, Creepy Easter!

Not much going on this Easter. Things are closed. Get-togethers are suspended. But for my fellow horror fans, you can enjoy a digital Easter. Enjoy the day the best you can and stay safe. Let the bunny sleep this year. From Ghoulish Grin Films...have a peepy, CREEPY, Easter!

You Old Smoothie (Happy Birthday Billy Dee Williams!)

Image
The long and illustrious career of Billy Dee Williams started on Broadway in 1945 in "The Firebrand Of Florence" at the tender age of seven. He made his film debut in 1959's "The Last Angry Man" and from there on had a busy career in theater, film, and television. He's earned Emmy nominations for 1971's "Brian's Song" and starred alongside Diana Ross in the acclaimed "Lady Sings The Blues." But to the science fiction fandom, old and young, he will forever be known as gambler, con artist, and  playboy Lando Calrissian in the blockbuster Star Wars Saga. He first appeared as the character in 1980's "Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back," widely regarded as the best film in the franchise. He would then appear in the conclusion to the original trilogy "Star Wars Episode VI: Return Of The Jedi." "Return Of The Jedi" was a mind blowing experience for me as a seven year old theater goer in

A Titan Of Indie Film (Happy 94th Birthday Roger Corman!)

Image
One of the all time greats of independent cinema, Roger Corman has been referred to as 'The Pope Of  Pop Cinema.' An actor, director, and producer (a role more comfortable to him by his own admission), his career spans decades, with films directed and produced by him either through the major studios or independently. He's often recognized as giving many a high profile Hollywood artist their big break, with names like Jack Nicholson, Peter Fonda, Diane Ladd, Bruce Dern, Sylvester Stallone, Dennis Hopper, and William Shatner (who just recently celebrated his 89th birthday) among them. And he's made some high profile cameos in films like "The Silence Of The Lambs," "The Godfather Part II," "Philadelphia," and "Apollo 13." His films were basically B-Movie fare, but enjoyable. Leaving the pretense to the 'artists' and just giving moviegoers what they want...a great time at the theater. He did, however, create a memorable
